Former Marketplace
The Ex Mercato is the name of a social center located in the heart of the Spanish Quarter. The Ex-Market project began as the redevelopment of a former market area. The building that is the subject of my thesis is the former market of Sant’Anna di Palazzo. The intended use is inspired by the successful initiatives promoted by other social centers operating in the Naples area. These facilities offer various services to support their target neighborhood such as counters for help at work, psychological support, soup kitchens or popular gyms.
As for the design part, the central focus is occupied by the theme of architectural integration and contextualization. The first level composed of a covered plaza, created in response to the lack of open spaces in Spanish neighborhoods and obtained by elevating the structure.
The second level is designed as a welfare zone, with canteen, help desk at work, pharmacy and outpatient clinic.
The third level is designed as a teaching area with a reading area and open classrooms.
The fourth level created to house spaces dedicated to wellness and physical recovery with a popular gymnasium and spaces dedicated to physical therapy.
The fifth level consists of a large roof garden where you can admire the Naples skyline.
